As many of you are aware, there has been a changing of the guard at the Elizabeth Bloodworth Library. What a job to fill the shoes of Patty Libby who has kept you up on news from our community library for so many years!
For newcomers to Big Canoe, the library is on the lower level of the Broyles Center, accessible from the lower parking lot of the Big Canoe Chapel nearest the postal facility. We are constantly adding new books, CDs, DVDs and other materials through purchases and donations. Come browse our shelves!
Three of our newest books cater to World War II history buffs. The Forgotten 500 by Gregory Freeman relates the true story of a daring rescue of downed American airmen behind enemy lines in Yugoslavia in 1944.
The title of the second book is a doozy: Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis by Ben Macintyre. This nonfiction thriller takes place in 1943 and involves British Intelligence officers planting false information on a floating corpse off the coast of Spain, thus fooling the Germans about the invasion of Sicily.
Bringing the war closer to home when German U-boats massed off our coast, is the third book, A Measureless Peril by Richard Snow. This is a page-turner about the battle of the Atlantic and the struggle to protect our convoys and keep sea lanes open between the United States and Europe.
A different take on World War II is a new novel, The Postmistress by Sarah Blake. The story starts with a woman sorting mail in a post office, quietly pocketing a letter instead of delivering it. Set in the 1930s in Cape Cod, the tale revolves around the lives of three women who respond differently to an uncertain time under the stress of pending war.
Another new work of fiction is Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. This novel is about an English doctor bound for Ethiopia. What follows is the story of lives over decades with generations caught in political turmoil from India to Ethiopia. The good doctor shares observations while practicing medicine in inner city hospitals.
For Karen Kingsbury fans, we have eight new additions on our shelves that will fill in some missing volumes in this popular series. And, thanks to a recent donation, we have 27 new books for our Robert B. Parker collection. Come visit our entire collection in a special display on the window seat in the back room.
Last, but not least, are new movies in the library. New DVDs include Something the Lord Made, a true story about a famous cardiac surgeon; A War to End All Wars, which includes two World War II tales; and Children of Heaven.
For younger viewers, we offer Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove and Veggie Tales’ Sweetpea Beauty. New digital versions of old favorites include Chitty, Chitty Bang, Bang, Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
The library is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and Sunday mornings, 8:00 a.m. until noon.
